Felt Unit
In this seven-week unit elementary school students learn about the historical and cultural applications of felt and develop multiple skills and techniques for working in felt. The focus of the first lesson is how felt is made while experimenting and stretching the possibilities of the process. Students then synthesize previously gained art skills with the technique of needle felting in the creation of a felt composition. In the third lesson students expand their understanding of felt by learning techniques for creating three-dimensional forms. In the culminating lesson of the unit students interpret what an amulet means to them and why they see felt as protective. Students set goals and apply newly gained knowledge of felting techniques in the creation of a felt amulet. Students articulate their creative choices during a final critique which assesses understanding of the process and artistic decision making.
