Handmade Materials Unit
The Handmade Materials unit is designed to introduce multiple new mediums, materials, and processes through a multicultural lens. High school students explore the question, "What is the importance of handmade materials in art making?". Students observe how different cultures create art-making materials and reflect on how they experience these processes through journal entries. The first lesson Recycled Papermaking , which is based on papermaking methods invented by the Chinese, and introduces students to the technical process of papermaking. The second lesson, Personal Paintbrushes, explores handmade yucca leaf paintbrushes made by the Pueblo people, before opening up into an experimental self-directed handmade paintbrush lesson. The third lesson, Personal Pigments, introduces students to the history of paint making with a focus on Ancient Egyptian pigment inventions. In this lesson, students research natural pigments before moving on to an experiment with making their own. The final lesson, Stab Bound Sketchbooks, brings each lesson together in the creation of a portfolio-sketchbook based on the Japanese 4-hole binding method.
